Evelyn B. "Eve" Shelnutt was born in 1941 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to James M. and Evelyn B. Waldrop. She published three collections of short stories with Black Sparrow Press; and four poetry collections plus a fourth short story collection with Carnegie Mellon University Press. With the Randall Jarrell Fellowship, she studied creative writing with Fred Chappell at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), receiving her M.F.A. in 1973.
